Happy Feet, Backpack Buddies, and Dictionaries for East Cooper Third Graders project

The goal of the Dictionary Project is to assist all students in becoming good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners. We believe this can happen when providing them with their own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each third grade student. Their new dictionaries can be used at school and at home for years to come. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. So, to further support students, we give dictionaries each year to children in the third grade.

Each year, the Breakfast Club provides shoes to deserving grade school students in the Charleston area, at no cost to them or their families.

The children are given the opportunity to select and receive a new pair of socks and shoes.

It’s hard for many to imagine that students east of the Cooper leave school on Friday and return Monday having had very little to eat over the weekend.

But not every family is as affluent as many of the residents in the community. And in tough economic times like these, food is rationed in individual households.

But the neediest students will now be sent home with nutritious food thanks to the Rotary Club, which is committed to raising funds, packing back packs, and delivering them weekly. Students in East Cooper schools no longer go home for the weekend without healthy foods and snacks.
